High blood pressure: Amlodipine

Health

Why is it so important that my child takes Amlodipine

High blood pressure (hypertension), can cause damage to many parts of the body such as the brain and heart. Amlodipine lowers blood pressure by widening blood vessels.

What is Amlodipine available for?

Tablets: 5mg, 10mg

Liquid Medicine: Order liquid medicine in 5 mg or 10mg 5 mL from your pharmacist

Amlodipine: When should I take it?

Amlodipine should be taken once daily. This usually happens in the morning.

You can help your child remember by giving the medicine at the same time each day.

What should I give?

Your doctor might recommend that your child start with a low dose. The doctor may increase the dose depending on how your child responds to the medicine.

Your doctor will determine the right amount of Amlodipine (or the dose) for your child. On the medicine label, you will see the dose.

When can the medicine begin to work?

After a few days your child’s blood pressure will begin to fall, but you won’t notice any change in your child.

To determine how effective the medicine is, your doctor will test your child’s blood pressure.

What happens if my child vomits (is sick)?

Give Amlodipine to your child if they are not feeling well within 30 minutes of receiving the dose.

Do not give Amlodipine to a child who is sick for more than 30 minutes. Wait for the next dose.

Your family doctor, nurse or pharmacist can offer advice if your child becomes ill again. Based on the child’s specific medical condition, they will determine what to do.

What happens if I forget?

You should only give it once per day if you are accustomed to doing so. Do not give the missed dose if you do not remember. Do not wait for the next dose.

What happens if I give too many?

Too much Amlodipine can cause high blood pressure in children.

You should inform your doctor if you suspect that you have given your child too many Amlodipine. Even if the container is empty, you should still have the packaging. This will prove useful to your doctor.

Are other medications allowed to be taken with Amlodipine at the same dose?

Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, you can give your child paracetamol and ibuprofen.

Some medicines should not be combined with Amlodipine. Before giving Amlodipine to your child, talk with your pharmacist or doctor.

Before giving other medications to your child, consult your doctor. This includes complementary and herbal medicines.

Do you have any other questions about this medicine?

During Amlodipine treatment, your doctor will regularly check your child’s blood pressure.
