June Johanne (Nelson), a professor of History and political science, gave birth to David Soul on August 28, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois. His father, a Lutheran minister, was a professor of History, political science, and Director of Higher Education at the Lutheran Church in America. He was also the Senior Representative to Lutheran World Relief in the rebuilding of Germany following the Second World War. His mother was a teacher. Soul’s grandfathers were both evangelists.
